This Was A Commercial Break
Okay, I’ve been away for a while working my “ctlr C” and “ctlr V” digits to the bone for a living. In that time I’ve learned sooo much about improving website performance it’s mind boggling! Now that I finally have time to think about this blog again I’m going to tell you everything I’ve discovered.
If you’ve read any of my post (thanks Mom!) you’ll know I’m not into “lightweight” or “trendy” blogging. You know the kind of posts I’m talking about; “Will I have cornflakes for breakfast today?”, or “Today I had a deep thought…” etc. FYI I have cornflakes everyday and I only have deep thoughts so this kind of blogging is of no interest to me.
With that in mind, you can expect more deeply interesting web tips and tricks real soon.
Lorem Ipsum For Web Design Mock-ups
July 19, 2007 at 6:35 pm | In Free Web Tools, Website Design Tips | Leave a CommentLorem Ipsum
We web designers often have to mock-up designs without the benefit of having text for the page. Rather than using your shopping list or extracts from your private emails as text placeholders, why not copy and paste some ‘Lorem Ipsum’ text into you web page design instead?
Lorem Ipsum is classical Latin literature from 45 BC (over 2000 years old) and has been used by the print industry since 1960’s. It will not distract from your design as your private emails would and gives a more finished appearance to your mock-ups.
Good for your web design mock-ups, good for your clients.
Visit www.lipsum.com for the full history and a whole bunch of Lorem Ipsum to choose from.

Smart PageRank Backlinks Analyzer is the easy way to check your website or blogs backlinks.
Just enter your domain name in the search field and click ‘Check Domain’. Smart Pagerank Backlinks Analyzer will display a list of websites linking to your website, it also shows the pagerank of each of those pages that link in (which is great isn’t it?).
It’s Not All Fun And Games
You can have a lot of fun with this simple and easy to use free web tool but a far better use is to spy on your competitors backlinks and to discover which websites those links come from. Check out each of those link generous websites and see if you can get any of them to link to your website. Cheeky but completely above board!
This is a great way of sourcing links, and what do links mean? Links mean better pagerank (and much more importantly links mean more traffic!).

Fun With The Way Back Machine
Internet Archive have been archiving websites since 1996 right up to today. They’ve managed to archive over 85 million websites so far and counting.
Internet Archive’s Way Back Machine is a window into the Internet’s colourful past, allowing us to travel back in time to visit websites that are now only a distant memories (and archived in the Way Back Machine of course – not that distant really). For some website designers those old defunct websites are best left to rest, but to our eternal embarassment people can still get a glimsp of those table hack websites with nasty JavaScript of yester-year.
Enough Talking Time To Travel Back In Time…
I found one of my very first websites on the Way Back Machine and it’s not as bad as I thought it was. Join me on a trip back to May 24th, 2002.
- First, go to the Way Back Machine
- Enter the URL http://www.socialistparty.net (BTW, I’m not a socialist, they had to pay me)
- Hit the ‘Take Me Back’ button (you are now travelling back in time…)
- You should now be able to see the search results, click on May 24 2002, the date I worked on the site
- Result, the site is loaded, all-be-it without some graphics that I guess were deleted from the server at some time.
Lets Be Practical
Okay, this is the kind of web tool that I could spend hours playing with but it’s not just for fun, yes, it has a practical use too.
Tip: If you’ve lost information from a website because you saved over it or whatever, it might be worth checking the Way Back Machine to see if the pages were archived prior to you totally destroying them (I just checked one of my websites and it was last archived May of this year).
With luck you’ll be able to retrieve the website content you’re looking for and get on with the rest of your life.
MySpace good for SEO?
July 5, 2007 at 10:16 am | In Free Web Tools, SEO Topics | 2 CommentsMySpace – Web design Ireland
So I signed up to MySpace yesterday but would you believe the names I wanted to use for my MySpace were all taken! The early bird gets the worm I guess. So after a little testing for available names I discovered that http://www.myspace.com/webdesignireland was available.
It was a temptation I just could not resist (for SEO and networking reasons). I decided to go for it as I work in the web development and web support services industry. What will be interesting is to see how my MySpace URL will perform in searches for ‘web design Ireland’.
There’s not a lot going on over at my MySpace just yet but it’ll be interesting to play around with it see how useful it is for networking, promotion.
Free Friend With Every Sign-up
Every sign-up to MySpace seems to get a FREE friend. I don’t even know this guy and he’s made me his friend! I’m on the fast track to popularity now!
